Dan Willis is currently one of my favorite authors. Many authors out there can write escapist literature, but Dan Willis puts in the extra work and creates interesting characters with real depth and relatable problems. The villains are believable, yet devious. The challenges set before our protagonist are daunting, and you can feel the tension as things seem insurmountable. But Alex Lockerby is a tenacious hero who keeps working the case even when things seem hopeless.

"Read it before it's on Netflix!"
My review of the first book said, "Harry Dresden meets Nathan Heller". I've just finished book #5 and I'm hooked. The stories started small and are building to something epic. Start this series now! You have a chance to be a part of something that will be as big as Dresden, WoT, and GoT. Someone in Hollywood needs to get a clue and turn this into a movie or series.

"Ready to binge read?"
Charles G. Stuart
I picked up the first book in this series ("In Plain Sight") from one of Larry Correia's book bombs. It was, quite frankly, excellent. I've now grabbed each of the books in this series as they appear, and they range from really good to wonderful. Mind Games ranks towards the wonderful end of the scale - if you like noir private detective mashed up with a bit of constrained magic, do yourself a favor and grab these. When I finished Mind Games, I had to immediately re-read Correia's Grimnoir series to get over the disappointment of being finished with the latest Arcane Casebook installment.

If you liked The Arcane Casebook series, this is definitely a must read. If you like stories of magic and action, this is a must read. If you like gumshoe stories set in the early industrial period, again a must read. If you like all of the above, this is an absolute must read! The characters are realistic, human, and relatable despite the magic in the story world. The action is paced just right. The story is superbly written.
This is a MUST READ. I cannot wait for the next one in the series

"A New Direction"
Dan Willis is an excellent author. If you haven't read the Arcane Casebook series, start there first. If you have, you're in for a treat. The same solid writing and characterization is applied to background characters from that series. Grab this one ASAP and you'll eagerly await future volumes. The heck with superheroes! This universe needs to be a movie or TV series. Disney? NetFlix? Amazon? Anybody wanna make a boatload of money?

"Great Twist on an Excellent Series"
A strong supporting cast has a spin off series of their own. Same place, same time, same parallel universe. Good yarn, great, well-developed characters, strong plot. I enjoyed this initial foray and look forward to more in this series and in the Lockerby Runewright Detective series. More please. ASAP. Thanks for another enjoyable read.
This takes two genres of story and mashes them together; a steampunk tale and a western. All too often the steampunk tale is set in Victorian England or a reasonable facsimile. In my mind the western and a steampunk story are a better fit for each other. And the author fits the two together like hand and glove.
It's got Wild Bill Hickock as a sword slinging, fast shooting superhuman lawman who flies around in a airship piloted by an organic computer named Sylvia. Plus it's got techno-organic monsters, land going aligators, and vampire-zombie hybrids. Hey what's not to like about that?
It's a story that both adults and YA's alike will enjoy.

"Better than Steampunk"
I've never been a big fan of most steampunk, but Dan has done a phenomenal job here. This is more of an alternate reality story. Sure he does a fair amount of name dropping, but the whole technological base of the world is different from ours and it is pretty cool. This book reminds me of the Bartimaeus series. History re-imagined if the basic facts of the world had changed, and like that series, this is good fun and a great story. A great opener for what I'm sure will be an excellent series.
